Back in Burgos (day 12) I was at a crepperie with Pamela and Reeve where we were talking a lot about how lucky we have been about weather until that point (the luck continued my entire Camino). At the crepperie there was a young Spanish couple in their early twenties who over heard our conversation and asked if we will finish in Santiago. When, we replied yes I remember the very beautiful young girl laughing and telling us “I am from Galicia, and if you finish the Camino without being rained on in Galicia, it means the world has ended”.
Well, it hasn’t! Because today, Galicia welcomed us (we crossed from Castillo Leon to Galicia on top of O’Cebrerio yesterday) with its rain.
In the morning, I had a plan to leave a little late as the weather forecast had rain stopping at 8am for 3 hrs. The plan was at least do the 3 hrs dry by starting at 8am and tough it out on the last 2-3 hrs of the hike. But 7 layer lady had other plans. She wouldn’t let my personal guidance system (PGS) decide when we leave so we left at 7am while it was pouring rain. I got my shoes soaked in first 15 minutes and walked the entire day in wet shoes and socks. And at 8am the rain stopped 😀!
I told Amy, my PGS has never failed me on the Camino until she showed up. She smiled at me but it was not genuine…I think. We made up over chocolate crossaints in the next town. We are besties again. She is so Coquette.
We walked through a beautiful forest mostly alone under chestnut, oak and birch trees. It was rainy for the first hour and last and besides my soaking shoes I was warm and dry (thank you Arcteryx pants and jacket once again).
Amy’s goretex shoes and 7+ layers held well too.
