Day 1
The route from SJPDP to Roncesvalles is arguably one of the most challenging yet stunningly beautiful parts of the Camino. Spanning 27+ kilometers, it takes you through steep ascents with an elavation gain of >4000 through lush landscapes, and offers panoramic views of the Pyrenees that are simply breathtaking. The climb towards Roncesvalles is considered a rite of passage, testing your limits, and setting the tone for the journey ahead.
Below are some photos from early in the morning during sunrise.
As expected the Napeleon route was closed due to inclement weather so all of us (~100) who waited for April 1st to start the route was rather disappointed. The alternate route, while still very beautiful, shares the path with cars at certain sections which makes it much less popular. That being said it was still an incredible experience for both me and Amy. And yes she was still fitter then me! We completed the stage in 6hr and 12 minutes covering 28.5km, 39000 steps (Amy) and climbing 4180 feet.
The physical strain of the climb was tempered by the stunning views. Having Amy next to me made the entire climb easier and lighter, simply due to who she is and how she lives. On the sections which were on the road she did ask me to walk first in case the incoming traffic hits us. I felt very special (!) but also agreed that if one of us had to survive for our kids it should be her!
Competing with Amy around the topic of physical fitness has always been fun and today was the same. While Amy was the fitter one today; I dress better on the Camino as she takes the concept of layering to an extreme which is not helpful aesthetically😀. She does 3 inner layers, 2 mid layers and 2 outer layers. Finishes the ensemble with a balaclava. It not a proud to be around look for sure!
My knee held up today. Amy tells I walked funny the last 6-7 kms, but I will take it.
Arrival at Roncesvalles:
Reaching Roncesvalles was a moment of triumph mixed with relief. The medieval monastery that greeted us was a sanctuary,. The monastery itself dates back to 12th century and the adjacent church constructed in the beginning of 13th century was modeled after Notre Dame (Paris) again in Gothic style. Tonight we are staying at the monastery with about 100 other pilgrims and excited about joining them for our very first communal pilgrim dinner. When we arrived we had lunch with two Korean military pilgrims. Young guys who are going to take 40 days to complete the Camino. I felt little uneasy with my 34 day target as they are both 20 years younger without an injured knee.
Our bed for the night is on this compound. Amy is entering into the courtyard in the 3rd photo.
With regards to food, so far Camino has not provided for these two vegetarians! I am contemplating eating innocent animals for the month of April. Very seriously! Can't sustain on fries, salads and bread for 35 days. Amy was disappointed to hear this. But she is usually disappointed with my thoughts anyway.
Below are some additional photos from the day.
Kms today: 28.5
Kms total: 28.5
Steps total: 39k Amy, 37k Ahmet
Slayyyyy
Reading your blog is inspiring and emotional! I can only imagine the pain that must be edging its way through your body, especially your injured knee. I pray that you have full healing as you sleep and that every cell in your body operates as it is designed. Thank you for sharing this journey with us! Amy is all that you share and more! I can imagine what a loving encourager she is as she joins you on the road! I’m so happy for the two of you!
Congrats on a successful day 1 with amazing sunrise and views! First pic of Amy should be on the cover of REI showcasing her many layers!
Watched I’ll Push You, very inspiring and lots of tears. Big thanks Ceyhun for the recommendation!
